Job Market in Criminal Justice

The United States Department of Labor indicates that most occupations in or associated with criminal justice are expected to grow as fast as the average of all other occupations through 2014.

Employment of probation officers and correctional treatment specialists is projected to increase. Many openings will be created by replacement needs, especially considering the large number of these workers who are expected to retire. Although job opportunities for correctional officers are expected to be excellent, the employment of correctional officers is expected to grow more slowly than the average.

Due to a more security-conscious society and concern about drug-related crimes, there will be an increasing demand for police services. Because of the relatively attractive benefits and salaries, the number of qualified applicants will exceed the number of job openings in federal and state police departments, resulting in increased hiring standards and selectivity.

Opportunities will be better in local and special police departments, as well as iin urban communities. Regardless, applicants with college degreees should have the best opportunities for policing positions.
